Proserpine Sugar Mill (Queensland, Australia)

21 January 2009 – DalinYebo principal, Proserpine Sugar Mill and Biorefinery, says it is expecting a lot of international attention once production of its world-first furfural plant begins in 2009.

Construction is expected to resume within a month on Australia’s only furfural plant and the only one in the world that will produce zero emissions. Furfural is a solvent created by the milling process which is used to make a range of products including paint and pharmaceuticals. The mill’s secretary, Ian McBean, says the plant should start commercial operations this year. “Our time line is to have construction complete by April which will allow us adequate time to commission the plant, which is a very thorough process that we have to go through,” he said. “All of that is really just in preparation for getting into full commercial production during the 2009 crushing season.”
